Phison Gen5 E28 SSD wins industry recognition for Best SSD

The biggest news at the Phison booth was the introduction of the ultimate Gen5 SSD: the E28, Phison’s flagship 8-channel DRAM product and the world’s first SSD to break 14 GB/s on both sequential read and write. It also delivers 3 millions IOPS for random read and write speeds. The E28 is essentially the next step up from the E26 and can offer even greater performance and efficiency than its predecessor thanks to its 6 nm manufacturing process rather than the E26’s 12 nm. The smaller node also helps increase power efficiency.

The its Best of CES 2025 article, Tom’s Hardware recognized the E28 as the Best SSD:

“The E28 has eight channels and 32 Chip Enables (CEs), with support for capacities up to 32 TB. It also supports NAND speeds up to 4200 MT/s. Thanks to the process node shrink and architectural updates, power use ends up at 8.5W under heavy load — the E26 drives could hit up to 12.3W in our testing. It also has sequential read and write speeds of 14.5 GB/s, effectively maxing out the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface, with random read/write IOPS of 3,000K.”

In another CES-related article, Tom’s Hardware also reported:

“Phison was the first company to offer an SSD controller with a PCIe 5.0 x4 host interface and was the indisputable leader in the market of enthusiast-grade SSDs for a couple of years. This week, the company cemented its lead by introducing its next-generation PCIe 5.0 SSD controller for the best high-end SSDs, the PS5028-E28. The new chip promises even higher performance and compatibility with next-gen 3D NAND.”

Other industry publications had even more to say in support of the E28.

TweakTown:

“Phison has just unveiled its new weapon of choice for serious gaming and productivity, with the introduction of the PS5028-E28 Gen5 SSD with up to 32TB capacity and up to 14.5GB/sec read speeds.

… Phison explains the PS5028-E28 as the ‘world’s fastest consumer SSD with up to 14.5GB/sec sequential read and write performance. Synchronous random performance at 3M IOPS read and write. 8.5W average power consumption, no heatsink required.’”

Kitguru:

“Leading the charge [for Phison at CES] is the PS5028-E28, Phison’s flagship PCIe Gen 5 controller built on TSMC’s advanced 6nm process. This powerhouse delivers an unprecedented combination of sequential read and write speeds, reaching a staggering 14.5 GB/s, making it the fastest SSD controller on the market.”

TechFeed:

“Phison is ringing in the new year and CES 2025 with a brand new PCIe 5.0 controller, the PS5028-E28.  It will be capable of sequential read and write speeds of up to 14.5GB/s, an insane amount of bandwidth compared to what we had to suffer with just a few years ago. It might not help your Steam games load much faster, but if you ever move the installation location, even a huge game will only take a few seconds.”

TechPowerUp:

“At CES 2025, we found the SSD controller that will spur high-end NVMe Gen 5 SSD adoption. [Phison] on Monday launched the new E28 series controller (full name PS5028-E28). This chip is built on the much more advanced TSMC 6 nm process. The new process lets Phison significantly lower the electrical cost of its NAND flash interface serializer-deserializer, and step up performance closer to the interface limits of PCI-Express 5.0 x4. The controller offers sequential speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s, which is an increase from last year’s E26 Max14um variant.”

Phison debuts world’s first mainstream Gen5 SSD, the E31T

Also making a splash at CES was the E31T, a DRAM-less Gen5 PCIe SSD controller. The advanced controller was put to great use in combination with Micron’s G9 NAND flash to create the high-performance Crucial P510 SSD. The Crucial SSD delivers superior power efficiency for “extended notebook battery life and razor-sharp load times,” said Micron’s senior director of product marketing and management Jonathan Weech, and the drive “offers a distincy advantage for creators and gamers alike.”

Here’s what attendees said about the E31T.

TechFeed:

“The new PS5031-E31T PCIe Gen5 SSD controller will be popular with the price-conscious consumer; it is Phison’s new DRAMless controller for PCIe 5.0.  The new controller will offer up to 10GB/s read, and on larger drives perhaps writes that approach the same. …. With support for up to 8TB drives, this controller may become the go to for gamers who are building a new system.”

TweakTown:

“The new Phison PS5031-E31T is the first DRAM-less PCIe Gen5 SSD controller that pushes over 10GB/sec reads. … One of the big pushes here from Phison is the battery life out of the new E31T SSD controller, with some decent battery life gains that will not just save system power, but generate less heat and still sustain that 10GB/sec+ performance.”

Kitguru:

“Phison is also addressing the growing demand for efficiency and affordability with the PS5031-E31T, a DRAM-less PCIe Gen 5 controller that breaks the 10 GB/s barrier and offers a lower power consumption. … Phison’s E31T controller is already making its mark in the consumer market, powering Micron’s latest Crucial P510 SSD, a Gen 5 drive delivering speeds of 11,000/9,500 MB/s. We’ve seen quite a few good DRAM-less PCIe 4.0 SSDs that can perform almost as well as those with DRAM. With the E31T, we might finally see something similar in the PCIe 5.0 space. More importantly, it should also help reduce the entry price for such SSDs.”

HotHardware:

“… Micron announced a new P510 SSD model under its Crucial brand, which features a mainstream controller. More precisely, the P510 is powered by Phison’s E31T. … Micron is touting sequential read and write speeds of up to 11,000MB/s and 9,550MB/s, respectively. Those figures are short of the theoretical maximum bandwidth of 15.75GB/s for PCIe 5.0 SSDs, but the speeds still blows way past the theoretical maximum bandwidth of 7.88GB/s for PCIe 4.0 SSDs.”

WCCF Tech:

“ … The Phison E31T controller is making its debut in the Crucial P510 SSD, a brand-new consumer SSD Micron is announcing at CES this week. The Crucial P510 makes powerfully fast Gen5 performance of up to 11,000/9,500 megabytes (MB) per second available to the masses while lowering energy consumption — ideal for students, gamers, and creatives who need top-tier performance to boost everything from workflows to gaming.”

Club 386:

“When asked about Gen 5 SSDs, the first thing that comes to mind is hot running and expensive. Well, both may soon become a thing of the past as memory expert Crucial is planning to launch an affordable yet performant M.2 SSD in a couple of months. Based on Phison’s E31T controller, the Crucial P510 SSD checks all the boxes: High enough speed for most users, efficient operation to fit inside mobile devices, and a DRAM-less design to lower the final price.”
