Solid state drives were originally used as data storage only for top-tier workloads that required the fastest performance and lowest latency. Today, however, they\u2019re becoming increasingly common across other tiers as enterprises move to a hybrid computing model that combines on-premises data centers with public cloud platforms.<\/p>\n

In a recent SDC Channel Insights article<\/a>, Phison Project Manager Eli Hsu discusses why SSDs are used more often for data storage in public cloud platforms and how the hybrid model has driven that evolution. Part of the reason is the SSD\u2019s high performance balanced by decreasing prices that make SSDs more economical for enterprises. Another part is that organizations value the agility and flexibility of the cloud and are putting more intensive workloads on public cloud platforms to take advantage of the performance and scalability benefits. Those workloads require equally high-performance data storage\u2014which SSDs easily provide. Hsu also takes a look at the evolution of tiered storage and how SSDs fit into that structure today.<\/p>\n
