IT Press Tour: Phison Wows with Dynamic Showcase of IMAGIN+ Design Services to Industry-Leading Tech Media

From Automotive to Industrial Farming to Space-Based Logistics, Phison’s Flash Solutions Impress in a Variety of Custom-Designed Enterprise and Industrial Configurations

By | Jul 10, 2023 | All, Enterprise

For the first time ever, Phison US took part in the 50th edition of the IT Press Tour (ITPT). Attending media was enthusiastic in their curiosity and questioning of the “dynamic” Phison team, who presented the company and its solutions in three separate sections: Phison’s corporate history & business model, IMAGIN+ product/services overview, and compelling use cases in automotive, industrial farming, and space exploration.

A Silicon Valley institution, the IT Press Tour was established in 2010 to provide a platform for European and US journalists to meet with worldwide high-tech companies to discuss various IT topics, covering IT infrastructure, data management, storage, business and IT applications, artificial intelligence, cyber and IT security. Media takeaways also included new videos with SSD provider and Phison partner Seagate and space logistics provider Skycorp highlighting the companies’ work with Phison.

Among the journalists, there was intense interest in ‘the largest SSD supplier you’ve never heard of.’ In discussing the corporate overview, the segment went very long as Michael fielded questions regarding the company’s business model, its ubiquitous but under-the-radar industry presence, and curiosity around why Phison chose now to become more media-forward after more than 20 years in the space.

In answering to questions around ‘why now,’ Phison US General Manager and President Michael Wu had a simple, powerful response: To increase visibility around the IMAGIN+ and the Design Services Lab and utilize media attention to build further trust among key enterprise players.

ITPT media attendees were fully engaged and the discussion was incredibly lively. Here are some relevant quotes, links to awesome coverage, and more:

As Phison is a design partner for the big SSD suppliers, it is among the first to get involved with new SSD technologies such as the latest layer count 3D NAND, QLC-format cells and PCIe interface generations.

Wu said: We are the early NAND enabler.

Among the long list of projects supported by Phison, the one with Skycorp with the idea to use the first NASA TRL-6 certified Phison SSD on the moon is very special. TRL-6 is low earth orbit, TRL-9 will be after the moon mission.

The manufacturer of the 8GB industrial-grade PSS4A111-8G uSSD that sits inside Perseverance said the rover uses the flash unit for its photo processing, storage and transmission system. The stakes are high: space is not a break-and-fix environment. If the SSD fails, then the rover’s imaging system stops working.

Phison is working on the integration of PCIe 6.0 and CXL, which recently arrived in the latest servers using Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids and AMD Epyc Genoa chips. SSDs with a dual function PCIe, NVMe and CXL, for example, are under study. “NAND can thus be considered as DRAM, but with intelligence embedded in the SSD”, explained to us the CTO of Phison Sebastien Jean.

The Phison team is excited to introduce the IMAGIN+ platform to media and spread the word about our ability to deliver design-in solutions that enable previously unattainable enterprise data performance. Follow Phison on LinkedIn to keep up with the latest.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) :

How does IMAGIN+ benefit enterprise or OEM customers?

IMAGIN+ provides low-latency, power-optimized, and high-throughput flash systems tailored to enterprise applications. OEMs benefit from shortened development cycles, tight firmware-hardware integration, and Phison’s proven track record in NAND enablement. IMAGIN+ also offers direct access to Phison’s engineering teams for joint development and validation, improving reliability and accelerating time-to-market.

What real-world applications were highlighted during the IT Press Tour?

Phison demonstrated solutions for automotive data logging, precision agriculture, and space-grade SSDs, such as the TRL-6-certified drives used in Skycorp’s lunar systems. These use cases show Phison’s ability to tailor flash for harsh environments, long operational life, and extreme reliability standards beyond commercial IT.

How does Phison’s involvement in NAND development provide a competitive edge?

As an early enabler in NAND roadmap development, Phison has early access to technologies like 3D NAND, QLC, and emerging PCIe standards. This early access allows it to optimize controller-firmware integration ahead of competitors, giving OEMs a head start on new product launches.

What role did Phison’s SSD play in space missions like Mars or Moon exploration?

Phison’s industrial-grade SSDs, such as the PSS4A111-8G uSSD, were used for onboard photo processing and data transmission on NASA’s Perseverance rover. These components meet rigorous reliability standards because failure in space means total mission loss. This illustrates Phison’s engineering depth in mission-critical flash deployments.

Is Phison working on CXL and PCIe 6.0 integration, and why is that important?

Yes. Phison is developing SSDs with PCIe 6.0 and Compute Express Link (CXL) capabilities to support AI and data-centric applications that demand memory-class latency and bandwidth. Integrating CXL allows flash to function more like DRAM, offering fast access with persistent storage, critical for server-class environments.
